English Penny Lane
Once there was a substitute teacher taking over a class for the day. When calling the roll, he noticed that three students were away, but dismissed them as out sick. However, five minutes into the lesson, a knock sounded on the classroom door. When the teacher opened it, he saw a boy standing on the threshold.
"Hello, are you from this class?" asked the teacher.
"Yes, my name's Jack Davies."
"And where have you been, Jack?"
"Up Penny Lane."
"OK, then, in you come," said the teacher, "sit down and start your work, Jack."
He forgot all about Jack until five minutes later, when another boy knocked at the classroom door. "Hello, young man," said the teacher. "You're from this class, aren't you?"
"Yes," said the boy.
"What's your name?"
"David Armado."
"And where have you been, David," asked the teacher.
"Up Penny Lane with Jack Davies."
"Oh, all right then. Come in and start your work."
The teacher thought this a bit odd, but sat down and started marking some tests. But, after another five minutes passed, another knock sounded at the classroom door. "Ah, this must be our last absentee," announced the teacher, striding over to the door and pulling it open.
On the threshold stood a girl, her hair a little disheveled.
"What's your name, little girl?" asked the teacher.
"Penny Lane," she said.
